The Fair and Square quilt block combines squares, rectangles and half-square triangles. Since you're familiar with these shapes, it should go together quickly. Think of this block as a review of what you've learned so far.
What You Need
Seam allowance included in measurement of the cut fabric.
Step 1
Place light strips on cutting mat. Right sides together. Edges even. Cut four 2" squares. Separate squares. You should have eight2" x 2" squares.
Step 2
Put four of the squares aside for now. Get your ruler and fabric pen. Place the other four squares right side down. Draw a diagonal line (corner to corner) on each square.
Step 3
Place a light square on upper-left corner of medium square. Right sides together. Edges even. Make sure your drawn line faces the correct direction. Stitch on drawn line.
Step 4
Trim seam to ¼". Press seam toward dark fabric.
Step 5
Place a light square on upper-right corner. Right sides together. Edges even. Stitch on drawn line.
Step 6
Trim seam to ¼". Press seam toward dark fabric.
Step 7
Place a light square on lower-right corner. Right sides together. Edges even. Stitch on drawn line.
Step 8
Trim seam to ¼". Press seam toward dark fabric.
Step 9
Place a light square on lower-left corner. Right sides together. Edges even. Stitch on drawn line.
Step 10
Trim seam to ¼". Press seam toward dark fabric.
Step 11
With right sides together, stitch a dark rectangle to the right and left sides of center square. Press seams toward dark strips.
Step 12
Arrange the remaining dark rectangles and squares as shown. With right sides together, stitch one light square to each side of rectangle. Press seams toward dark fabric.
Step 13
Arrange units as shown.
Step 14
Flip Row 1 onto Row 2. Right sides together. Match and pin the two outer seams. Stitch. Press seam away from center block.
Step 15
Flip Row 2 onto Row 3. Right sides together. Match and pin the two outer seams. Stitch. Press seam away from center block.
Fair and Square quilt block should measure 6 ½" x 6 ½".
