The Quilt Blocks

Quilt Blocks
Let's look at the quilt blocks you'll be making. Notice how they contain three basic shapes:

Rectangles
Triangles
Squares

Quilters use these shapes all the time. That's why I chose these blocks for the lessons. If you learn to sew these simple shapes, you can make almost any pieced quilt.

Below you'll find the fabric yardage charts as well as tips for completing these lessons. Let's get started!

  • Block #1 Rail Fence

  • Block #2 Log Cabin

  • Block #3 Four Patch

  • Block #4 Flying Geese

  • Block #5 Pinwheel

  • Block #6 Fair and Square

  • Fabric Yardage

To make this quilt, use either the fabric-on-the bolt or the fat quarters chart. For the backing fabric, choose whatever color you prefer.

It's a good idea to buy a little more than you need. This comes in handy if you make a mistake and need to cut out more pieces. Also, buy all your fabric at the same time. If you don't, you might not find it when you go back to the store. Start building your fabric stash with any leftovers.

If you want to make the yellow, blue and white sampler, use this fabric chart instead.Fabric Yardage Chart

    Tips for Completing These Lessons
    • If you run across a term you don't know, please check the Quilting Terms section.

    • Read through each quilting lesson before you begin. This helps you to visualize each step before you piece the quilt blocks.

    • Take a break. Times flies when you're involved in making quilt blocks. It's important to keep your circulation moving. Get up, stretch you legs and wiggle your fingers. Grab a cup of coffee or munch on some chocolate.

    • Have fun! That's the whole point of quilting. Did you know that quilting lowers your blood pressure and reduces stress? Research shows this to be a proven fact.
