Quilt Sashing

Quilt Sashing
Sashing Strips

Quilt sashing strips are easy to sew. But problems can occur when you sew your strips in the wrong order. To avoid this, arrange your fabric pieces before you sew them. It helps to follow the diagrams for each step.

Make sure you trim off the selvages before you cut your strips. Here's an illustration:

What You Need
Cut Sashing Strips
Cut strips on Lengthwise Grain

Seam allowance included in measurement of the cut fabric.

Sashing strips are cut 1/4" longer than you need. This comes in handy if any blocks measure more than 6 ½". Some of your blocks might measure less than 6 ½". If this happens to you, don't fret.

In quilting, there's no such thing as a perfect block...or a perfect quilt. No matter how carefully you sew, you're bound to create blocks of different sizes. So, do your best. Nobody's going to notice those little flaws anyway.

Step 1

Press all the quilt blocks so they lie flat. Then arrange fabric pieces like this:

Step 2

Flip Block B onto sashing strip, right sides together. Top and side edges are even. Stitch. Press seam toward quilt sashing.

Step 8

To make sashing strips align properly, you'll need a fabric pen. Draw two vertical lines on Rows B and C (as shown in red). Drawn lines should match the seams directly above and below them.

Step 9

Flip Row A onto Row B. Right sides together. Pin so that drawn lines and seams match. Stitch. Press seam toward sashing.

Step 10

Flip Row A/B onto Row C. Right sides together. Drawn lines and seams match. Press seam toward quilt sashing.

Step 11

Arrange the two 2 ½" x 26 ¾" strips like this:

Step 12

With right sides together and top and sides even, sew a strip to both sides of unit. Press seams toward sashing strips.

Step 13

Trim excess fabric.

With quilt sashing in place, your top should measure 18 ½" x 26 ½".
If it doesn't, that's okay. Give yourself a hand; you've done a super job!
